OSSIAN MELIN

Ossian Melin is a video artist from sweden who creates music videos for the now hugely influential yung lean, part of whoms success is attributed to these videos. One word to describe these videos is aesthetics. The videos attempt to create eye candy through using bright colours and well known imagery, but then editing it and adding some more artistic content to create a video which one would look at and be able to watch for ages as it is always rich in content and culture. The reason I am looking at Melin is because youth culture has been largely influenced by ‘Yung Lean’ and as previously mentioned, alot of whoms success is attributed to Melin’s very creative and aethetically rich videos. The aspect I like about these videos is that they are very pleasing and when I create my videos I want to be able to use this idea of making something that is pleasing the eye. So while I am trying to inform of a subject I believe it will be much more effective if it also appears nicely aswell.

An example of Melin’s work can be found here:

I propose here a piece that would be made possible very cheaply which would send a message to many people at a very low cost. What I propose is a sculpture that would inspire many of London’s youth of today. It would be situated in the undercroft at the Southbank of the river Thames. This area is known to be a free art space and anything is allowed to happen here, as long as the law is not broken and nobody is harmed. The ideology behind my work is that the youth of today are ignorant to history and religion, which is what has sculpted the very culture they live in and this piece would make a statement about that. The area has many columns to support the level above it, I will use one of these columns to hang a model of Jesus Christ, with a model of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene below the column, praying towards Jesus. The setting is very important as the undercroft is completely covered in graffiti and there are many skateboarders who visit this place. These two things, graffiti and skateboarders, are both associated with youth, but also ignorance towards rules and the ‘old’. This sculpture would stand out in the undercroft and would be a very interesting sight. The good thing about the undercroft is that thousands and thousands of tourists walk past it every day and not only do they walk past, many stop to take photos and it even has railings for the tourists to lean on to observe the happenings in the undercroft.

The sculpture won’t need much money for production and is very simple to conduct. All that is needed is papier mache, paint and chicken wire to create a skeleton for the papier mache to be played upon. The sculpture of Jesus will be hung with wire upon the column to stand up and the models of the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene will stand on their own at the feet of Christ. overall it will be a very effective piece at making a statement for a low cost and should be selected for the funding, even though it barely needs any.

Vice is a magazine company that has become very popular over the last couple of years, they write articles and create short to medium length documentarys on the different controversies around the world, hence the name Vice. They hire young writers and film makers to make these reportings around the world. I am interested in Vice because I am myself reporting on how the youth aren’t content with todays politics and the youth rebellion in general. As a responce to Vice I am going to write a Vice styled report on the youth rebellion and see what I can create. I will report on the demonstration I took photos of which called for David Cameron’s resignation.

I decided to make a trip to central London to document some of the graffiti that is visible. To get a sense of what graffiti embodies, I decided to visit two places where it is abundant, The undercroft at southbank and Leake Street. These two places are within a 5 minute walk from eachother and both are legal spots for graffiti and street art meaning they are completely covered with graffiti with not a single inch of unpainted wall. They both have an  atmosphere due to the amount of vibrant and lively colours that cover the walls and are a perfect resemblance on what youth culture really is. As pointed out in my statement I am really interested in the differences of youth culture and what some could call ‘tradition’, so I am going to conduct some photoshop experiments with various photos I have taken to show this difference.

This image, taken from a website (Link Below), shows the evolution of western dance music since 1800 and how it has evolved around the world to create many different genres. I am interested in the UK section as it is clearly influenced from America and Jamaica, being heavily influenced by Hip Hop, which could was originally influenced by Traditional African Music. This also influenced the Jamaican Music like Reggae which went on to influence Jungle in the UK, and subsequently Drum and Bass. A section of Art which has been heavily tied into both Jungle and Hip Hop is the art of Graffiti, which emerged out of New York in the late 70s. This artform is so interesting as it is one of the only art forms which actually makes a statement as it is done completely ilegally, which shows what the undertakers think of the government as it is breaking the laws which are in place to protect property. I want to document this rebellion against the government in today’s London and see what the youth of today think about different topics.

These are photos I took at a protest which was formed to force the primeminister to resign, after being found to profiting from offshore tax havens. It shows the general upset of the people, and the majority of people who attended were young. One thing which stood out to me was that halfway through this protest a man with a large speaker arrived and started playing drum and bass music, which went to show how it was young people attending the event as many people were enjoying this music. Im going to explore the evolution of this music and see how it has changed over the last 20 years.

This is the culmination of all the work I have done so far!

This is the culmination of my everyday project where I made a digital image for everyday of a week in a bid to further my skillswith digital art.

This is the first draft of the final piece I will be making. It is a very basic version that shows the plan and the movement within the piece of both the object and the camera. Hopefully I will be able to make it so that it can be an infinite loop....

This is the first draft of the final piece I will be making. It is a very basic version that shows the plan and the movement within the piece of both the object and the camera. Hopefully I will be able to make it so that it can be an infinite loop. This time I also added a soundtrack again but instead of before I made the soundtrack myself in Ableton to experiment with the senses. I decided for the music to be really fast and loud so it captured peoples attention faster and for longer.

For a higher quality version with the soundtrack that I made follow this link:

I created these images by sculpting foam blocks in such a way that I could get certain shapes, what I like about them is that I can place them in a pagoda type format which I find to be very aesthetically pleasing.

Here is my first attempt at 3D tracking, where I implement an object into a video from the real world, right now it isn’t great (its meant to stay in one place) but soon it will work alot better as my knowledge improves.
